Last Friday evening, IYAF presented a Royal Gala performance of Dance Futures, comprising a double bill by Rambert’s Quicksilver (Child’s Play) and Shoreditch Youth Dance & Smikle Dance Project (Hansel & Gretel).
It was an evening of outstanding performances featuring young dancers of professional standard, creating vastly different moods through their performances. Child’s Play, as the title suggests, was a light-hearted, fun piece by Quicksilver filled with little moments of mischief between the dancers on stage. In the second half of the gala, Shoreditch Youth Dance & Smikle Dance Project presented a stunning adaptation of Hansel & Gretel, conveying the narrative with skilful theatricality.
The Gala marked the celebration of the Festival’s 10th anniversary, and was attended by HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, who is President of Creative Youth, the Kingston-based charity behind the International Youth Arts Festival. The participating companies were also given the opportunity to meet Prince Edward after the performance.
